Heartshorn Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup shortening (home rendered lard)
- 3 eggs (beaten quite well)
- 3 Tbsp heartshorn (baking ammonia) (in 1 cup warm half and half)
- 1 cup warm half and half
- 7 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp lemon extract
- red sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Cream sugar and lard. Add beaten eggs.
- Add heartshorn dissolved in the 1 cup warm half & half.
- Stir in flour, salt and flavoring.
- Roll out, not too thin. Cut with cookie cutter. Sprinkle with red sugar.
- Bake at 450°F for about 5 minutes.
