My Favorite Doughnuts
Ingredients
- 3 1/3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp Watkins cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Watkins nutmeg
- 2 Tbsp shortening
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cups buttermilk
- canola oil (for frying, 3-4 inches)
Instructions
- Heat 3-4 inches canola oil to 375°F.
- Measure 1 1/2 cup flour and the remaining ingredients into a large mixer bowl.
- Blend 1/2 minute on low speed, then beat 2 min at medium speed scraping bowl occasionally.
- Stir in remaining flour.
- Roll dough gently 3/8 inch thick. Cut with a floured cutter.
- With a wide spatula, slide doughnuts into hot oil.
- Turn as they rise to the surface. Fry 2-3 min or until golden brown on both sides.
- Carefully remove from fat - drain on a rack.
- Serve plain, frosted, or mix cinnamon & sugar together and shake in a bag.
